Frequently Asked Questions

What PTT do I need for Motorola APX radios?
For Motorola APX radios (APX 900, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 6000, 7000, 8000), we recommend the Constant Able M9 GCAI PTT. It features auto-sensing impedance technology that works with both dynamic microphones (Ops-Core, Peltor) and electret microphones (civilian headsets). For the newer APX N-Series (N30, N50, N70) and MOTOTRBO R7, use the Constant Able M16 Mini GCAI connector.
What is the difference between dynamic and electret microphones?
Dynamic microphones (low impedance) are standard in military-grade headsets like Ops-Core AMP, 3M Peltor Comtac, and MSA Sordin Mil-Spec. They produce a weaker signal and require amplification in the PTT circuit.

Electret microphones (high impedance) are common in civilian headsets like Earmor, Howard Leight, and most earpieces. They produce a stronger signal and don't require amplification.

The Constant Able PTT automatically detects which type you're using and adjusts accordingly—no manual configuration needed.
What PTT works with PRC-152 and PRC-148 military radios?
The Constant Able 6-Pin NATO PTT is designed for AN/PRC-152, AN/PRC-148 (MBITR), and AN/PRC-117G radios. It uses the standard U-329/U 6-pin connector.

Important Setup: These radios require 3.3V Accessory Voltage ON and Mic set to "Lapel Mic" in the radio menu. Without these settings, audio transmission will not function correctly.
Do Peltor Comtac headsets work with all PTTs?
Peltor Comtac headsets use dynamic microphones and require an amplified PTT. Additionally, there are two wiring standards: US NATO wiring and European "Peltor Wired".

The Constant Able PTT handles both impedance matching AND wiring differences automatically. If you have a legacy U-94 PTT with European-wired Comtacs, audio will not work—you'll need either a Constant Able or a wiring adapter.
What connector does my Baofeng UV-5R use?
The Baofeng UV-5R, BF-888S, and most standard Baofeng radios use the Kenwood 2-Pin (K1) connector. This is the same connector used by Kenwood, Wouxun, TYT, Retevis, and AnyTone radios.

Note: Waterproof models like the UV-9R, UV-9R Plus, and BF-A58 use a different multi-pin connector and require a specific PTT variant.
What is a U-174/U connector?
The U-174/U (TP-120) is the standard NATO military headset connector used on virtually all tactical headsets including Ops-Core, Peltor Comtac, MSA Sordin, and OTTO NoizeBarrier. It's a 4-pole audio plug that carries microphone, earphone, and PTT signals. All Disco32 PTTs use this connector on the headset side, making them compatible with any standard military downlead.
Can I use one PTT with multiple radios?
PTTs are specific to each radio's connector type. However, with the Constant Able system, you only need to match the radio connector—the headset side is universal. So if you have multiple radios with the same connector (e.g., two Motorola APX radios), one Constant Able PTT works with both, regardless of which headset you're using.

Still Not Sure?

Frequently Asked Questions

What PTT do I need for Motorola APX radios?

For Motorola APX radios (APX 900, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 6000, 7000, 8000), use the Constant Able M9 with GCAI connector ($335). For the newer APX N-Series (N30, N50, N70) and MOTOTRBO R7, use the Constant Able M16 with Mini-GCAI connector ($399). Both feature auto-sensing impedance that works with any NATO-wired tactical headset.

What is auto-sensing impedance matching?

The Constant Able PTT automatically detects whether you are using a dynamic microphone headset (like Ops-Core AMP, Peltor ComTac, MSA Sordin) or an electret microphone headset (like Earmor, Howard Leight) and adjusts the circuit accordingly. No manual configuration, no guessing between amplified and non-amplified PTTs.

What PTT works with PRC-152 and PRC-148 military radios?

The Constant Able NATO with 6-Pin connector ($335) is designed for AN/PRC-152, AN/PRC-148 (MBITR), AN/PRC-117G, and AN/PRC-150 radios using the standard U-329/U connector. Set your radio to 3.3V Accessory Voltage ON and Mic to "Lapel Mic" for proper operation.

Do Peltor ComTac headsets work with the Constant Able?

Yes. Peltor ComTac headsets use dynamic microphones and come in US NATO wiring and European "Peltor Wired" variants. The Constant Able handles both impedance matching and wiring differences automatically. If you have a legacy U-94 PTT with European-wired ComTacs, audio will not work. The Constant Able solves this.

What connector does a Baofeng UV-5R use?

The Baofeng UV-5R, BF-888S, UV-82, and most standard Baofeng radios use the Kenwood 2-Pin (K1) connector. Use the Constant Able K1 ($250). Note: waterproof models like the UV-9R and BF-A58 use a different multi-pin connector and require a specific variant.

Can I use one Constant Able PTT with multiple radios?

The PTT connects to a specific radio connector type. If your radios share the same connector (for example, two Motorola APX radios both use GCAI), one Constant Able PTT works with both. The headset side is universal and works with any standard NATO-wired headset regardless of manufacturer or impedance type.
